Mental Health First Aid is a training course that teaches people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health issues. It equips participants with the skills to support someone experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a mental health problem.

Anyone can benefit—especially those in leadership, HR, education, healthcare, or customer-facing roles. It’s ideal for workplaces aiming to improve wellbeing, reduce stigma, and create a supportive environment.

No. MHFA is not clinical training. It teaches you how to listen non-judgmentally, offer reassurance, and guide someone to appropriate professional help.

Courses typically include:

  • Common mental health conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety)
  • Crisis situations (e.g., suicidal thoughts, panic attacks)
  • Communication techniques
  • Signposting to support services

It’s not mandatory, but strongly recommended. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) encourages employers to consider mental health in risk assessments and provide appropriate support.
